WasteServ has taken over the operations of the Regenerative Thermal Oxidizer (RTO) gas plant at Maghtab.

The handing over was made by the Haase Vassallo Consortium which installed and tested the facility.

The RTO is where hazardous gases from the closed Maghtab dump are collected, cleaned and then released into the atmosphere in a state which is not dangerous.

To date, 378,300 tonnes of CO2 equivalent has been saved from being released into the atmosphere by the plant, WasteServ said.

Reverse osmosis equipment was also installed to treat leachate and produce second class water to be used onsite.

The RTO plant is is extracting an average of 6,000 cubic metres of dangerous gases per hour from the Maghtab dump. Once these gases are collected, they are burned between ceramic plates at some 1000oC.

The project included the construction of gas wells, pipe-works and gas treatment plants that would enable the successful collection and cleaning of hazardous gases. The main benefits of the project are mainly the improvement of the air quality of the Maltese Islands, by treating dangerous gases such as dioxins, greenhouse gases such as methane and also the reduction in odours.
