Residents-only parking
With more and more localities implementing residents-only parking schemes, I feel the time has come for the rest of the localities (those without such schemes) to form an 'everywhere else parking scheme' whereby parking in all the member localities is restricted to residents of localities within that group.
That way, residents of localities with residents-only schemes will be able to park freely in their own locality, whereas residents of 'everywhere else' will be able to park in one another's localities freely.
Hopefully, when residents of residents-only schemes are unable to find parking space anywhere else except their own locality, they will put pressure on their councillors to remove the residents-only schemes in order to return to the 'everywhere else' group.

'My impression is that all those who have written against the scheme have ample parking opportunities near their home and do not know the meaning of driving around trying to find a parking plsce.'
I beg to differ. I live in St Paul's Bay & we don't have a 'residents only' scheme so in summer especially I sometimes have to drive around for ages looking for a place. But I also work in an area where there is 'residents only' parking and have to spend ages again looking for a spot. And I am NOT in favour of the schemes!

Even one single parking space, and here I am not referring to handicapped persons, is one too many, discriminatory and therefore ILLEGAL.
Defy the system and take it to the highest courts and do not let local counselors and mayors trample on your right to park anywhere without any reservations for local residents.

Why can't the Maltese accept that they have too many cars on their islands? Nobody should have a right to a car in such a densely populated country. All new properties must be built with the appropriate underground car parking facilities. I would also make a significant parking 'permit' charge for the 2nd, 3rd and more car onwards within each address that doesn't have appropriate underground parking facilities for these vehicles.
Many in Malta do not need a car. I know several people who will drive around endlessly in Sliema to find a parking space when in fact they have only driven less than a mile from their homes.

@ Mr Cali
You make it sound like the parking scheme will only take a very small insignificant part of the parking space in Sliema. Well you're totally wrong, as wrong as the whole concept of the residents-only parking scheme! I believe that no Sliema resident owns anything outside the four walls that encloses their house.
I pay the road licence as much as any Sliema resident. If the latter comes to Fgura and parks his car outside my house, then I should be able to do the same in Sliema. Otherwise the Sliema Local Council should start to fund road works himself where parking spaces have been reserved for his residents.
And anyhow, it's not going to affect me. When I go to Sliema, I will park in the first parking space I find, whether it is illegally reserved or not. I will fight any fine I get, take it to court and win it, as I'm sure that many others will do. I encourage every driver to fight this battle as by doing so the Sliema Local Council will get what he deserves and ends up running at a loss!

I have lived in G'Mangia right next to the hospital for 20 years before it moved to Mater Dei. Believe me i have no object to each council opting for residential schemes as i know the frustration in trying to find a parking place close to home, instead of having to park and walk ten (yes 10) blocks away from home.
Also i will not consider myself a second class citizen just because there is a parking resident scheme. My impression is that all those who have written against the scheme have ample parking opportunities near their home and do not know the meaning of driving around trying to find a parking plsce.
As for business how many of those somplaining have been abroad andspent hours walking while shopping but no here is we have to walk an extra five minutes we raise hell

Mr Cali have you also counted the number of private garages available in the area?

As far as I know there is no locality in Malta where all parking is reserved for residents only. In Sliema, for example only half of all the available parking spaces will be for reserved for residents only, the other half is for anyone and everyone at all times. Moreover, the half reserved for the Sliema residents will also be available for anyone between 9pm to 8 am. The only restriction is that between 8am and 9 pm where non-residents will be able to park for 2 hours only in the half reserved for Sliema residents. I wish people got their facts right before putting pen to paper.
