During a three-day visit to the mountain village of Pollina, Sicily, 11 students from the Gozo College's Ninu Cremona Lyceum, Victoria, took part in an EU-funded week-long series of theatrical activities with students from 12 Sicilian schools. They were accompanied by teachers Maria Buttigieg, Mario Apap and Robert Vella, college principal Frank Gatt and school head Francis Abela.
The Gozitan students performed a play entitled Step by Step Up the Ladder of Life, written and directed by student Joel Calleja with the help of Alexander Hili and the three teachers. The cast was made up of students Joseph Abela, Emanuel Attard, Adrian Axiak, Nikola Bajada, Anthony Cordina, Stefan Farrugia, Alexander Hili, Richard Portelli, Joseph Refalo, John Vella and Steve Vella.
As part of the performance, one of the students, Joseph Refalo, who is also a well-known singer, sang three songs in English, Italian and Maltese respectively - Heaven, Questa Piccolo Grande Amore, and Inti Djamant.
During the show, a promising Gozitan student artist, Brendan Buttigieg, drew a painting depicting the feelings of one of the main characters in the play.
