A 23-year-old Maltese woman, residing in St Paul's Bay, was yesterday plucked from the sea in an apparent semi-conscious state after she was sighted in the middle of the bay, the Armed Forces of Malta said.
The crew of the yacht Moon Spirit saw what at first they thought was a corpse half-way between Qawra Point and St Paul's islands. The crew's report was relayed to the AFM at about 5 p.m.
An AFM Alouette rescue-helicopter was scrambled while a Maritime Squadron rescue launch proceeded to the area. An AFM rescuer found the woman still alive, dressed in a bathing suit and T-shirt. She even managed to mumble some words referring to Buġibba and "hating boats".
She was flown to Mater Dei Hospital for urgent treatment.
