Steep increase in gas prices
A steep increase in LPG gas prices was announced this evening by the Infrastructure Ministry.
It said the review followed the government's decision to remove the last tranche of subsidies on these products.
"The subsidy on LPG products has been gradually removed over the last year, a move that is required in anticipation of the opening of the internal market where more than one operator is expected to operate and consequently the removal of subsidies was also necessary in order to ensue fair competition," the ministry said.
Subsidies to LPG products in the last four months cost the government €600,000.

Marc Piscopo, in all honesty I am not trying to be sarcastic or funny in any way. Invest into wall-to-wall carpets, thermal put-over blankets and good genuine feather-bed covers, in the long run it will be cheaper than gas. Or, if you have any good sense, come next election vote this bloody lot out, and all this is coming from a party that cried foul at Sant`s `Kuxjenza Socjali`, what a joke this lot has turned out to be.

It's bad enough we're struggling on wages that are a whopping 44% lower than what our ''equal'' E.U. brothers and sisters earn. But we Maltese are excellent moaners. We lack the courage to stand up for our rights because everyone is afraid of of the repercussions of saying "enough is enough!" - so unless we all want to end up living in one roomed homes, counting the hours we keep the bulbs lit while gathering around the one gas heater, it's time we insist on the implementation of REAL energy saving measures on a national scale: for example, spare us the wind farm solution! Malta has more sunshine days here than windy ones! What would it take to replace all the electric street lamps with solar powered ones for example? Sure the initial investment is high, but the long term savings would mean putting more money back into the pockets of the tax paying citizens! The ridiculous cost of living has spiralled out of control and my 1c on petrol just doesn't make the saving grade on my A-list!

I surely hope that now that the subsidy has been removed, LPG powered cars will be allowed to operate within our island, together with incentives to whoever would want to convert his present car to LPG.. This has been done in third world (developing) countries already so I do not see why it should not be done here as well..
Come on.. let's see some positive come out of this.. The excuse of the subsidy on LPG for not allowing LPG powered cars should now be gone... Right?

I simply cannot believe how some dare defend such increases.
When are we going to wake up and STAND UP TO THIS GOVERNMENT AND SAY ENOUGH IS ENOUGH?
Can't the people see that notwithstanding the fact that we are continuously being made to fork out EUROS, EUROS AND MORE EUROS this inefficient Government is still not able to solve the country's problems? Can't the people see that the more we pay the more the country's deficit rises?
Where is our money going???

Aug 3rd 2009, 09:30
@All
seems you understand little economics about energy subsidies. Enemalta could not expand new products since any increase in consumption meant an increase in government subsidies. For example, auto gas was never introduced in Malta, for (real) fear that a massive use of gas for cars would increase subsidies.
My friends, leave markets to settle prices themselves and then choose the energy source accordingly. How many people have NOT invested in solar heater (obviously, not including those who do not have access to the roof) because gas prices were low?
My friends, START SAVING and change your lifestyle.

Quote: "I am fed up seeing others leach from what I earn with my hard work!"
What about the private sector leaching from what you earn? Apparently, business people can charge what they decide to, without having anything against them on their conscience! The illusionary moral is that they work for it! Where is the once held value that one should be just even in business? As far as I know, overcharging is theft.
The Maltese right glorifies itself as defending the christian values. However, close examination of what is happening, is showing that they are favouring a savage market, where the new rule of the jungle reigns supreme.

@ All bloggers, especially the P.N. or Gonzi P.N. supporters................A year and some months ago the Maltese people had the chance to get rid of this arrogant government, and lost it .Now, stop gramble, and moaning, because every body knows what is going to happen in another 3 to 4 years from now, and the P.N. will win the general election again. For those who survive by then, will prove me right, IF I WILL SURVIVE. Some coment on some thing else...........A scheme for those who has been register for work for these last 5 years. Altghough I agree with the scheme, may i ask.... Is this another " DEJMA " KORP TAL PIJUNIERI" " BAHAR U SEWWI " which the Labour governments use to do ? This is 2009 and not the soceit era 70's - we should not be paying subisides but paying the right amount for what we consume.
@ H. Galea - bulk means that the client has his own storage system that he has to maintain. the cleaning, filling and maintenance of gas cylinders have a cost.
@ M. Mifsud - the 600K that you are speaking about comes out of my taxes - I would rather keep these taxes to myself and pay for all that I consume - I am fed up seeing others leach from what I earn with my hard work!

peter what do you use for cooking pieces of wood?.mostly people use gas cookers,i use 2 each month so thats an increase of 6 euros each month making that 24 gas cylinders in a year,i have to fork out twice as much euros as i used to buy the same amount of gas.very nice and now let us see how much these new gas distributors are going to charge us.

@all who voted yes to EU. stop blaming AG and the GOV. you had all the opportunity to vote NO and filtered better the details of becoming an EU member . privitisation and removal of GOV subsidies are not part of the EU system. thus the GOV is only acceeding to what BRUSSELS has outlined to all new EU member states. the rest is all history. did you all who voted yes expect otherwise from a nation with almost Zero natural resources?? yes it is going to be tougher..and moaning will not help at all either. so grin and bear it.

Though an increase is always an increase I would like to ask how many gas cylinders one uses over a span of a year. For me it's more of a concern the fuel prices which is a daily use matter rather than the gas.

@saviour cordina Where on earth did you get this information re price energy going down in other countries but Malta? In Scandinavia energy price keep going up and even in Great Britian. The only difference is that in Scandinavia we are urged to use solar energy and people tend to choose to invest in this technology then invest in flashy cars.People rather walk or cycle in this huge land unlike Malta 2 or 3 cars per family. We dont moan .We understand priorities of life.

At the end, the truth about the real advantages of privatisation are becoming crystal clear! Who said that it is advantageous for the customer? Are higher prices and sudden savage increases in prices an advantage for the customer? Sure they are, they increase the GDP, they increase the profits of the private sector who can expand and hire more workers!
The reason was that it leads to more choice! Maybe, we will start using methane from our own fermenting sewage and from our bowel gas! Wait..., what an idea, that sure lowers our gas expense!

If LPG Bulk per Kg .82 so 10Kg cylinder should cost Euro 8.20, 12Kg = Euro 9.84 and 15 Kg =Euro 12.30, in other words you are robbing us 0.80, 0.66, 0.70 respectively. Also a full gas cylinder is 22 kg and when empty 11 kg, so you are also robbing us one Kg of Gas. Do you know that freight of Gas vessels have dropped by half, Are all the oil tankers anchored off Malta back in business !!! Austin why are you always in the negative, tell us the Profit you are going to make, why is the government always at a loss.

This is one of the reasons why the GWU is insisting that the COLA shall be given in full to all. These gas prices are quite a good example why COLA shall not be combined with productivity. These gas prices increases are not going to affect the workers only, so COLA shall be given in full to all.
