The fifth day of the World Championships regaled the Maltese swimmers with a fifth national mark.

It was again Andrea Agius who set a new limit, this time in the 200 metres breaststroke.

Swimming in the second heat yesterday morning, Agius trimmed 0.33 seconds off John Tabone's previous best set in April 1998 when covering the distance in 2 minutes 35.06 seconds.

Earlier, Talisa Pace and Melinda Sue Micallef were involved in the heats of the 100 metres free, with the former clocking 1:01.01 and the latter 1:00.99, both being a fraction of a second outside their personal bests.

Mark Sammut was the second male swimmer representing our colours yesterday. He swam the 200 metres back in 2:19.46 seconds, while the girls' 4x200 metres relay quartet of Davina Mangion, Micallef, Nicole Cremona and Pace just missed out in their bid to break the national record of 8 minutes 59.75 when they finished in 9:00.55.
