The bay located in front of Main Square, Bugibba has been re-instated as a swimmers’ zone, the Malta Maritime Authority said.

The authority said that earlier this summer, it was served with a garnishee order prohibiting it from delineating and marking the area as a swimmers’ zone.

This order was issued following an application in court by one of the commercial vessels’ operators using the area.

Although this bay was already established as a swimmers’ zone through a notice to mariners, pending the court decision the authority removed all marker buoys and signage.

The court has now decided in favour of the authority and the necessary measures have been taken to re-instate the zone.

The MMA has this year increased the number of swimmers’ zones around the to 37, delineating and marking the most frequented and popular swimming areas.

Such zones are clearly marked by visible yellow and red coloured buoys deployed at 50-metre intervals

The authority urged the public to report contraventions at sea on tel. 119.
