The motorist who ran over a six-year-old boy earlier this month crushing his legs and leaving him with a hairline fracture in the skull has still not been caught.

The police have in fact launched a fresh appeal for information on the hit and run that had left the boy in critical condition for two weeks. Sasha Mamo is now receiving therapy at home but is waiting to undergo another operation.

He was run over outside the National Pool Complex in Triq Maria Teresa Spinelli, Gżira at about 6.45 p.m. on July 11.

His father said the family was running late for a waterpolo match between Sliema and St Julians, when he heard tyres screeching and his wife, Mireille, screaming. Still holding his young daughter in his arms, he turned round and found his son lying on the ground with his leg trapped under the wheel of a car.

A passer-by called for assistance and asked the driver to move his car. The male driver, who had alighted from the car when the accident happened, got back inside the vehicle and slowly doubled back but then drove away.

Neither the parents nor the passers-by could remember the car's registration number, making police investigations difficult. Indeed, there are conflicting versions of what the man's car looked like. Two eyewitnesses said the car was white and one said it was grey. Two said it was a Peugeot and for the other it was a Fiat.

Simon Mamo said the driver was either in his 50s or 60s and wore glasses but he was too distracted by his son's injuries to give him more attention.

Anyone with any information on the incident can call the Sliema police station on 2294 2431, the general headquarters on 2122 4001 or the crime stop hotline on 119.
