Piano plans welcomed
The Valletta Alive Foundation has welcomed the plans for the building of an open-air theatre and for Parliament to be moved to City Gate despite its initial concerns over Renzo Piano's proposed designs.
The foundation said it was confident that Mr Piano's innovative designs and astounding architectural mastery would be a major tourist attraction that would make Maltese citizens proud of their capital city.
However, it is concerned about the progressive loss of parking in the city and the removal of the access road over City Gate and has urged the goverment to find both short- and long-term solutions for parking and traffic circulation while ensuring minimal disruption in Valletta during works.
The foundation had also expressed concern about the relocation of shops situated outside City Gate, which would need to be moved due to the project.

''We approve this project because we are gentlemen in 2009 not is the 17th, 18th or 19th century.''
At least our forefathers left us something to talk, resaerch and boast about...(as well as a tourist attraction).
What are we going to leave behind,,,,'Ghalik, ghal uliedek u ghal ulied uliedek'.....concrete square block of flats?!?

"...the Parliament of Malta with all its supporting infrastructure to be located on Manoel Island, centred on the Fort, and the rest of Manoel Island developed as the Civic Centre of Malta.."
If you were to apply some lateral thinking you would find out that Manoel Island and Tigne Point are the site of a 350 million dollar project by Midi Consortium and that this at an advanced stage of construction. Tell me, Mr Borg, have you ever heard about it?
Why is it so difficult for some people to accept the very simple, very basic fact that Parliament has to meet in Valletta? Mr Borg, do you have any clue why Valletta is the capital of Malta? Why do you think? Because of the Royal Opera House?
It would be quite humorous to suggest that Manoel island be declared part of Valletta but I wouldn't be surprised if you did make such a suggestion.

@Joe Azzopardi: with regard to the open air theatre, you have got it wrong, or have been watching too much Net TV! The open air theatre will be in use for max 3 months of the year - unless as somebody stated that we should get used to sitting in the rain! We're spending €20 million on a half baked theatre that will need more maintenance than a normal theatre because all its insides will be subject to the elements. Seats and equipment will have to be removed and put back each year. What a sheer waste of money! It would have been better to wait a few more years when hopefully we will be better off and build a real theatre.

A lot of talking is being said re Piano’s plans for Valletta main portal (Entrance) and Theatre. My concern is the materials and methods of construction that are going to be used in this project
I sincerely hope that this project will at least LAST a couple of hundred years, hence be boasted by the future generations like we’re doing with what our forefathers left us!
Imagine what a humiliation, when in the future the bastions and most monumental palaces in Valletta will still be in place and still boasted, whilst the project that is being proposed for Valletta with the 21st Century Architecture??? is being pulled down to make place for God knows what!

Until work actually commences on the new Parliament House consideration must be given to the option for the Parliament of Malta with all its supporting infrastructure to be located on Manoel Island, centred on the Fort, and the rest of Manoel Island developed as the Civic Centre of Malta with all or as many as possible of the Ministries, especially those presently in Valletta, relocated to purpose built buildings in keeping with the architectural features of the Fort. There is also space for the required parking needs to be planned. All yacht servicing and yacht building activities presently carried out on the Island wouldl be moved to other suitable maritime locations from Marsascala all the way to Marsaxlokk and not forgetting Gozo, with the added economic/employment fillip to those districts. There would be a huge relief to the traffic/parking problems round Valletta, which would then become the business/cultural/retail centre of Malta . The most renowned thinker and innovator that ever came out of Malta is Professor Edward Debono with his "lateral thinking". Apply some lateral thinking to solve numerous problems on the basis of one bold decision.

We approve this project because we are gentlemen in 2009 not is the 17th, 18th or 19th century. We want the ruins for our heritage, a building for our Parliament, and a theatre that will not be a continuous strain to our finances

Scrap the plans and save Valletta from being vandalized by Gonzi and Piano.

what a sad time for Valletta. I do not like this project. I do not know and understand why are these modern dubai style plans should be adopted to a city so called built by gentlemen for gentlemen!!!! Are we so gentlemen now to build such a project ?. Why cant we build what was before and restore and no arguments? why should we have to suffer another 50 years of arguing that this project was not in the spirit of Valletta? Cant we be honest and declare we are fooling ourselves?
