Two friends were jailed yesterday after one of them was caught on Wednesday trying to leave the country with an Italian residence permit belonging to the other.

Adama Coulibaly, a 19-year-old from the Ivory Coast, gave his Italian residence permit to 28-year-old Nuoha Toure, which the latter used in order to try and travel from Malta to Italy by sea. He was stopped by passport control officers when they realised he was not the person pictured on the residence card.

Mr Coulibaly pleaded guilty to aiding his friend to try and leave the island and Mr Toure admitted to using the card which was not his.

Magistrate Lawrence Quintano jailed Mr Coulibaly for a year and Mr Toure for six months.

Lawyer Patrick Valentino was defence counsel.
