Mounir Mhoussini, a 20-year-old French student living at the University residence, pleaded guilty to trying to leave the island with a passport which belonged to someone else and to making a false statement.

After taking into consideration his clean police record, Magistrate Anthony Vella jailed the student for one year suspended for two.

Man damages barried following parker's inaction

A man who bent a parking barrier at the Portomaso car park was this morning conditionally discharged for six months.

After being ignored by a parking attendant, Julian Eric Sanderson, 48, from Merseyside and St Julian’s, walked up to the barrier and bent it while pushing it out.

He fully cooperated with the police, paid for the damage, apologised and promised never to repeat his actions.

Fined for illegally employing three women
