Karl Consiglio's contribution (July 25) compares the life of a horse to a life of a human being. He thinks it is absurd to kill an animal when it is suffering and not to kill a person who is suffering.

Although God is the same Creator both of human beings and animals, there is a huge difference between them. While God created us human beings in His image and likeness, and endowed us with knowledge, understanding and many other qualities, the animals have only instinct. We have a soul but animals do not. Our soul is eternal, animals have no life after death and no judgment after they die but we are judged according to our behaviour on earth. We can distinguish between what is good and what is evil. Whether we like it or not, we will appear before God when we die and we shall either go to heaven or hell.

The fifth Commandment is: Thou shall not kill. I think Mr Consiglio was joking when he asked "why not treat a person as we treat an animal".
