Malta received over €30 million for immigration since it joined the European Union in 2004.

The figure was released by EU Justice Commissioner Jacques Barrot who said Malta had been allocated €30,401,000 since accession under various programmes dealing with migration and should be receiving much more in the coming years. According to the programme related to the EU External Borders (EBF), Malta has already been assigned a total of €112 million for the 2007-2013 financial perspectives.

The breakdown of funds presented by Mr Barrot at the European Parliament shows that although in the initial years of membership Malta received small amounts, funds increased substantially during the years, reaching more than €10 million this year. In 2005, the first full year of membership, Malta had received €1,861,000 in EU funds dedicated to migration.

Mr Barrot was answering a question by Maltese MEP Simon Busuttil.
