Joe Said has been elected chairman of the Malta Bankers Association during the elected organisation's AGM. The other board members are Edward Cachia, Marcel Cassar, Muge Cergel, Tonio Depasquale, Cenk Kahraman, Ozgur Ozdemir, Alan Richards, Victor Rizzo Giusti, Anthony Schembri and Joaquim da Silva Pinto.

The combined balance sheet total of the association's member banks as at the end of 2008 reached €41 billion, while total equity stood at €3 billion. The number of their full-time employees was 3,814. The direct contribution of the banking sector to the local economy remains significant, with payroll last year amounting to €106 million, taxation on profit on ordinary activities reaching €80 million, and dividends paid to resident shareholders amounting to over €52 million. Loans and advances to customers totalled €26 billion, with amounts owed to customers standing at €17 billion.
