The Maltese cross was adopted on the Queensland flag because the very first Governor of Queensland, George Bowen, was posted in Malta for a period of time where he met his wife who was Maltese. I believe she passed away early in their marriage, so on behalf of his late wife who was a wonderful wife to him, Gov. Bowen decided to place the Maltese cross on the flag.
