Resident parking
The Sliema mayor considers residents who are not car owners as second-class residents. In their majority these are the elderly.
For justice's sake, at least one parking sticker should be issued to every household, irrespective of whether they own a car or not, to be used when necessary by family, carers and home helpers on whom the elderly depend. These have to compete for a parking space with workers, bank employees, hotel staff and other outsiders.
We are all Sliema residents and, as such, we too should have a right to preferential treatment.

The proposed system is already stupid enough as it is, don't add more non sense to it.

For your info I live in busy Msida and its a problem with parking too so i rented a garage , people who live in Sliema that own or rent a garage will probably be selfish enough to leave their garage empty for their visitors and park their cars on the road , the same road i pay taxes to use !
You will see that this Resident parking scheme will be short lived !
I do not resent this in my locality because its simply foolish and selfish ,,as i said before if every locality adopts this system what would be the use of a vehicle if you cannot park except in your locality , now doesnt this sound foolish C.Camilleri ?

@ s Azzopardi Sliema residents are paying taxes like everyone and have the right to find a place to park their cars in Sliema. Not all localities are frequently by outsiders like Sliema, and this give added reason why Sliema residents should have a residents' parking scheme. Of course those living in other localities resent the scheme but lets turn the tables the other way round. What would their position?

Residential parking is such an unfair and stupid idea ! I pay road tax so i have the right to park (legally) were ever i please , what IF all local councils do this ? has anyone ever thought about this matter ???
If this happens we can only drive through localities and park back home LOL ! It would be pointless owning a car /bike !
Come on get real , why are we paying road taxes than ?

"These have to compete for a parking space with workers, bank employees, hotel staff and other outsiders"
I strongly object to being referred to as an "outsider" by Ms. Mary Rose Cassar in her letter.

Instead of making Sliema a 'No GO Zone' for the non residents, why not allow the residents over night car parking facility at the established car parks for a nominal annual payment.
A bit of walk will be healthy in reducing cholestrol and keep heart muscles strong.
The scheme is abusively divisive vis a vis the 'non residents'
Perhaps the people from areas other than sliema should start charging the drivers from sliema for parking in their areas to recoup the money they are having to spend whilst visiting sliema for either work, school, doctor or meeting mum and dad.

@J Meli. To your question , i would say that one is considered as lazy . Although i live at the top of Manwel Dimech street , many time i parked my cark at the ferries and walked up . After all it does one good. One of the main problems is the countless number of Reserved parking for somebody who claims to be disabled, then you find that they are capable to walk without any problems to the local church or to the grocer or supermarket. Many Blue Sticker people just abuse for this fact.

"...but you'll find your pavement taken up by other vehicles..."
Wrong Mr Meli.
The pavement is NOT yours but PUBLIC property which cannot be appropriated for private use.

You yourself said that this is preferential treatment so it is discriminating against the rest of the citizens who are not residents. Therefore, this discriminatory treatment is ILLEGAL and everybody should defy the system and if issued with a ticket file a registered petition with the Board for Petitions at POBox 41 Valletta and if not accepted continue contesting it in the local tribunal and in Court because the local counselors and the mayor are DISCRIMINATING against you, something which NO one can do let alone they being a local government.
DEFY THE SYSTEM AND FIGHT FOR YOUR RIGHTS.

Ok then, just close Sliema to non-residents and keep it to yourself so called Sliemizi. Now even non car owners want a reserved parking space, just because they live in Sliema. If residents want a guaranteed parking space then they should PAY for it, public parking spaces are not part and parcel of one's residence.

Of course, most Sliema residents are in favour of this scheme, although I doubt that the people who live next to Saint James Hospital and Cara's for example, are going to find parking anyway. People who live on the other side of Sliema will now go to these places by car because they will have more parking spaces available, and will take up the spaces "reserved" for the residents in these areas! Regarding parking next to your residence, yes it would be nice, but I do not live in Sliema and I never find parking next to my house anyway. So much that when I have a late night out, I have to make arrangements to sleep at a friend's house, because otherwise it will be too dangerous for me to walk home from wherever I am lucky enough to park! So a lot of people are feeling like second class citizens now! Parking alternatives need to be found for "visitors" to Sliema. After all these visitors are there, like myself, earning a living and contributing to Malta's economy.

Parking should not be free; nor garage door spaces; large cars should pay more than small cars for parking; on the other hand the cost of cars should go down, by removing the tax added. When it is the norm to pay for parking then public transport becomes surprisingly cheaper!....and then we can afford to have a better service.....we will cycle and walk more...pollution levels decrease...and we will be happier.....I always dream large....

Residence parking is good..for..some..and..bad..for..others, but..can't make everyone happy, but one has to note that there are no EU restrictions on "residence parking" or for Reserved parking" for those who are disabled? I agree with special parking spaces for the disabled.
This sentence was against the Pieta Local Council who had not applied with the ADT. Other Councils, for example those in Valletta, Ta' Xbiex, and Sliema etc., held meetings with the public such as Ta' Xbiex and all voted in favour and then they..had.applied..for.a. permit.from the ADT which..was..approved..on..certain..conditions.
I do suggest that parking should be total prohibited but drivers could park for 120 minutes, depending on the area or place.
One has to place himself in the shoe of others, so just imagine coming back home to try as to park if possible opposite your house or at least nearest your residence, but you'll find your pavement taken up by other vehicles up to midnight if not even up to 1 am in the morning. These drivers are not from your locality and you have to park two, three or even four corners away? What would you say? Would..you...agree..with..the..no.. restriction.. to parking

As a sliema resident i still dont think that this is fair on the working public who recieve their daily bread from our town. Is it fair that the local council or car par enterprises pick
out of every workers pocket a few euros per day for jsut parking? Dont the working public pay enough in taxes and licenses?

Get real Madam, travel abroad a bit and see how it's done over there. You know very well that if a scheme such as yours is put in place it will be abused. The only persons allowed to park should be a visiting doctor,on duty, or a nurse. Apart from that, use the car parks.
