European Parliament elections - Maltese felt 'closest' to political parties
A European Parliament survey has shown that the Maltese had the highest campaign awareness in the run-up to the EP elections in June.
The Maltese were also the respondents who most said they felt close to a political party - at 78 percent, followed by the Dutch at 62 percent.
The Maltese came second when asked if they had always voted in the same way as they did on June 6. First came the Cypriots at 76 percent, followed by the Maltese at 66 percent.
Only four percent of the Maltese said they decided how to vote just a few weeks before the elections.
Seventy-four percent of the Maltese respondents said they felt it their duty to vote - second only to the Cypriots at 78 percent.
90% of Maltese respondents said they had all the necessary information in order to choose who to vote for, compared to the Cypriots, who came second at 79 percent.
The Maltese, at 78, were also at the top when they were asked about the importance of knowing the results of the elections and who had been elected.

@Noel Buttigieg Scicluna
Don't be so categoric. During my MEP campaign I spoke a lot about European Union directives and regulations - as can be witnessed on my website:

What do you mean by the word manipulated? Are you now saying that the PL is the trendsetter on these islands, after so many years of the PN and its "independent" spin doctors creating a false feel good factor, giving us a surreal sense of security?

"The Maltese were also the respondents who most said they felt close to a political party"... of course we do... we all have our connections to pull strings even when they should not be pulled... pfff!

I have to say this is an example of the superficiality of some of the Eurostat reports made with a common template that does not necessarily reflect the realities of the specific circumstances of each country. There was no campaign on European issues here in Malta, the PL manipulated it into a national campaign. The last thing the Maltese electorate were aware of were the political manifestos of the political groups in the EP. Yes we are close to political parties but in a domestic way not in a European way. And the duty to vote was not because we have any knowledge or belief in the powers of the EP but because we fought the election as we fight the national elections. And yes we were keen to know that the PL got four EMP and the PN two. Most of us will forget all about them for most of the coming five years and the last thing we will be doing is keep a check on their output !! And knowing a bit about the internal politics of Cyprus, I read in the statistics reproduced here the same situation as ours over there.
