Cruz: Julio Cruz said last week he was going to choose between Lazio and Napoli but reports in Italy yesterday claimed that Roma have joined the chase for the Inter forward. Cruz is out of contract and has reportedly received offers from several clubs. Fiorentina have also been linked with the Argentine.

Rosina: Alessandro Rosina is leaving Torino to join Russian side Zenit SP in a £6m deal. The Italian midfielder was unsettled following the club's relegation. "I am going to a beautiful city and I will be able to play in Europe. I'm happy," Rosina was quoted as saying.

Shearer: Alan Shearer admitted he is "in limbo" over his situation at Newcastle. The Magpies are still to appoint a permanent manager as uncertainty over the Championship club's ownership persists. "I know as much as you," Shearer told reporters. "I would dearly love it to be sorted out one way or the other then the club can move forward."

The 27-year-old right-hander, who has not played international cricket since February, comes into the side after Kevin Pietersen was ruled out of the rest of the series following surgery on an Achilles tendon injury.

Athletics: World 400 metres hurdles champion Jana Pittman-Rawlinson will not defend her title next month in Berlin because of a lingering back injury. Pittman-Rawlinson has only raced twice since returning to the track last month after a year-long layoff due to complications from a toe injury that forced her out of the Beijing Olympics.

Tennis: Russian Nikolay Davydenko clinched his first title of the season yesterday when he beat Frenchman Paul-Henri Mathieu 6-4 6-2 to win the German Open. Second seed and world number 12 Davydenko dropped only one set on his way to the title.

Cycling: New Zealand's Sarah Walker won her first BMX world title at the weekend, completing a personal haul of all three medals in the past three world championships. The 21-year-old was unbeaten in all three of her qualifying motos and the semi-final before winning the final in Adelaide, Australia. Walker, who finished fourth at the Beijing Olympics, won silver in the 2007 world championships in Canada and bronze in China last year.
