Volleyball marathon raises €121,193
A total of €121,193 were raised at a 52-hour Volleyball marathon in aid of Dar tal-Providenza, held over the weekend.
The marathon was held in the car park of the Siggiewi home, marking a return after five years.
Just over 200 volunteers and 35 players took part in the event, which was launched by President George Abela.
Dar tal-Providenza, which is home for 100 people with special needs, requires over €3.6 million a year.

I was involved in 4 marathons as a player now five. But this marathon kept something in my heart from the others. Staying at id-dar tal providenza for a weekend its very different from staying at trade fair or other venues as we did in the past events. Last Saturday i was going out of the dormitory where we players where resting and i was called by a person working at the dar tal providenza and asked me to help him to lift one of the residents from the car onto the wheechair. Being honest at 1st i was shocked but after i helped him i realised what it means that you need funds to run the home. For me it was just only a matter of 5 minutes but working there for 8 hours a day i think its very difficult. For us players staying there it was really nice. Some of the residents even came out every day for long hours watch us play. From my side i can say thank you the organization, all the volunteers and all the players who made this marathon possible to help others in big need.

In every situation there is always something to improve but at least thanks to the organisation we did the marathon. The good about it is that we collected a good sum in my opinion for the first time that was organized by the DTP. Regards the place it was the most ideal for everything, KEEP IT UP and praise those who bring out good ideas. Maybe see you next year.

Using Dar tal-Providenza as a venue was a gret idea, as Jennifer mentioned it gave the residents a chance to be around and enjoy all the fun, besides meeting the people who visited the marathon.
Joining up with other activities would start complicating matters and expenses can run high.
well done everybody, people who donated, volunteers and players.

mr fsadni, the marathon cannot be organised at such places because the players have to sleep over at the venue... the dar tal-providenza was a perfect venue since first of all it reduced the costs because there were no 'extra expenses' that go towards the running of the venue, and secondly those who attend and donate money would have the chance to meet those people benefiting from such generosity. @mr cortis... seriously... you can never ever call a volunteer greedy. s/he is already giving her/his time for something else! besides, who did you 'punish' by not giving the €10? let me tell you... you 'punished' people who need help to eat, or drink, or need any other help. shame on you! you didn't punish the volunteers or us players. you should have drawn the attention of the volunteers who called you and told them nicely that they might annoy people.

@ Mr. Philip Cortis
1) I agree with you 100%
2) I agree with you 100%
3) You could have easily presented yourself with 2 €20 notes and informed the volunteers that you wished to donate €30. I'm sure they had enough change to give you !!!

ONE SUGGESTION FOR THE ORGANIZERS......
WHY NOT COME TO AN AGREEMENT TO ORGANIZE SUCH EVENT WITH THE BEER FESTIVAL ??? MAYBE FIND A SPACE TO ALLOCATE A COURT AND SOME STANDS...surely will help to more funds !
THANKS

unfortunately there was no PR in relation to the event! i only got to know about it through tagged images of the players on facebook. i was lucky enough to have found the time to attend last night, but i am sure others would have wanted to attend or donate and did not even know about it!

@PB Cortis
agree with you that more publicity could have helped - since the ball has been sat rolling once again after an interval of 5 years maybe some publicity around secondary schools and post education institutes would not be a bad idea during the months of March/ April.
if I am not mistaken Dar Tal providenza needs around 13,000 euros per day so the sume collected will help oyut for around 9 days, that's not bad either when one considers that there was a fund raising activity only 3 weekends ago.
if you really wanted to you could still have given the 10 euros later after you bought your drink.
I think its quite unfair to say that the people collecting the money seemed greedy just because they "called" you - being greedy to help the needed.... it sounds fine. After all that wahat their work as volunteers was to collect funds.......3 cheers for them, not everyone is capable of doing it! Well done.
Good work volunteers and players...keep it up.

Well done to all however I would like to share 3 comments
1) to the organization - I personally think it needed more publicity.
2) to the general public - €121,193 is not bad at all, but that keeps them going for around 12 days
3) to the people that were collecting money - don't be greedy. Saturday evening we learnt about it in the news. We wanted to give and decided to give in Cash, not by phone, cause we know that the money donated by phone, they will get them after 6 months or so. We arrived Sunday early afternoon, and while still in the car, we decided to give €30. We only had €20 notes so we decided to buy something to drink, so we get a €10 note as part of the change and we would be able to give the €30 we wished to give. As soon as we entered, the people collecting money "called" us, and since we did not yet had the €10 notes, we gave them only €20.
