I see the periodic calls for removing the George Cross from Malta's flag have started again.

If Malta were to remove the George Cross on the grounds of it not being Maltese, then we may as well do away with the flag altogether given that it predates Malta's independence, but that is only one reason why such calls are objectionable.

Braying for the removal of the George Cross dishonours those who were alive when the award was made and who are still around to see their wartime experience trivialised as "brainwashing" and "attachment to a colonial past".

The justification usually made for the removal of the George Cross is that its presence is a symbol of Malta's colonial hang-ups.

Rather, it appears that colonial hang-ups are behind the calls for the cross's removal for why would anyone feel demeaned by the award, were it not for a chip on their shoulder?
