The Malta Council for Science and Technology (MCST) recently held a national consultation exercise aimed at identifying technologies that will be necessary in 50 years' time.
The exercise was held as part of the Civisti project, an EU-financed project aiming at developing tools for international public consultation on the future. It involves partners from Malta, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Denmark, Finland, Hungary.
Twenty-five people aged between 17 and 76 from various walks of life and diverse educational backgrounds took part in the two-day consultation, which was held at the Preluna Hotel, Sliema. Participants were guided into formulating visions for the future.
MCST chairman Nicholas Sammut also addressed participants during the consultation, highlighting the current national priorities in science and technology.
A group of experts are now studying these visions, together with those from the other countries taking part, to extract the technology necessary for these desired futures.
This should assist the European Commission to formulate the priorities of its research programme.
