Robber caught beating elderly man on CCTV, court hears
A hold-up in broad daylight on an 85-year-old man in Cospicua last week was caught on CCTV, a police inspector told the Magistrates' Court yesterday.
Police Inspector Jeffrey Cilia told Magistrate Jacqueline Padovani that Bernard Muscat, known as Benny, was caught on CCTV robbing and beating up the elderly man as he was walking in Cospicua at about midday on July 14.
The officer said the footage showed Mr Muscat repeatedly kicking the victim.
The 44-year-old, from Cospicua, stands charged with stealing up to €2,329 in cash, illegally arresting the man, slightly injuring him, handling stolen items, committing a crime during the operative term of a suspended jail term, relapsing and breaching the conditions of a previous release.
He was remanded in custody.
Police Inspectors Jeffrey Cilia and Fabian Fleri prosecuted.
Lawyer Renzo Posella Flores appeared for the accused.

If convicted, a photograph of this coward should be displayed in the National press, and same goes for all those who abuse and hurt children and old people..............................
At least we get to know who they are!

I agree with you that the law is too lenient. Such a crime should be penalised more severely since the victim is in a category of vulnerable people - the elderly.
However, (not only you, many people do this) the emphasis is always on the criminal and his punishment. What about the victim? In most cases, the victim ends up with no compensation.
This 85 year old man will probably live the rest of his life in fear, apart from the physical pain induced as well as the money stolen. Community work is good. However considering the high fines many criminals have to pay, I believe that a substantial part of them should go to an account for victims. With the accumulated money in this 'victims fund, the court should stipulate not only the punishment for the criminal, but the compensation for the victim. All financial, physical and psychological pain should be taken into consideration.

Are injuries resulting from kicking some one particularly an elderly man considered to be slight injuries? Has a bone to be fractured to say grevious injury. The consequence of kicking could damage the nerve and muscular system of a person, and this might appear after a few days.
The criminal code ought to be revised to reflect present time crimes.

hope he is not given a suspended sentence if found guilty...as if such characters can reform themselves?. People who beat and kick an 85 year-old are a write-off and a menace to society. They should be sentenced to a month in solitary and then made to do community work for three whole years. If they don't change then behind bars for life - LIFE..
