For generations to come, the project as proposed by Renzo Piano will be a monument to our national inability to take collective decisions.

Some years back, Mr Piano made a real attempt to create something as an architect and there was a full scale revolt.

As the years passed, Mr Piano realised we would never agree on the theatre and on City Gate so he worked on a "political" solution. He described the process very nicely by claiming that, since his first proposal he was given a clearer brief and that it was "through listening to the many little voices that come out of this great place that we came up with such enlightening ideas". Mr Piano's solution is not to rebuild the Royal Opera House and not to rebuild the city's gate but clear the present eyesore.

Upon reflection, we now ask: Why did we have to wait 60 years plus to declare that we are not doing anything?

As the saying goes: Indecision is the graveyard of good intentions.
