The Mellieħa Sports Club has been organising the Sports Festival, or as it is more popularly known the Sports Rally, for a considerable number of years.

This activity was conceived some 50 years ago with the participation of local youngsters. Athletics was the main sport and the programme contained the most popular potato and sack races.

Over the years, this sports festival evolved and fun games were introduced. The previously required athletic skills were put aside. Over 100 enthusiasts from six years upwards participate in this popular event.

Besides being a very-well attended activity by the local community, it is also a major tourist attraction in the village.

The most recent editions were organised with the collaboration of the Mellieħa Local Council. Thanks to the council's support, more elaborate equipment could be introduced.

The 2009 Mellieħa Sports Festival is being held on Sunday in the parish square at 6.30 p.m.

Tomorrow evening, the Mellieħa Local Council will organise their annual sports awards ceremony at the locality's Greek Theatre.

This event is aimed at rewarding the feats and cont-ribution of active sportsmen/ women and administrators from Mellieħa.
