A 27-year-old man from Cospicua was yesterday charged with stealing his son's toys and items belonging to his mother and girlfriend to sustain his drug addiction.

The man was further accused of breaching the conditions of a previous release.

Police Inspector Fabian Fleri told Magistrate Antonio Mizzi the accused had a serious drug addiction, which had led him to commit thefts to buy drugs.

He said the man's parents did not want him at home any longer because of the problems he was causing. He stole cash, jewellery and furniture belonging to his parents and even construction material, including drain pipes, from a site where his partner was building a home. The court also heard that the accused even took his son's toys to sell them to buy drugs.

Magistrate Mizzi denied bail and recommended that the prison authorities assist the accused address his drug addiction.

Lawyer Martin Fenech appeared for the accused.

Names are not being published in order to protect the child's identity.
