The 52-hour volleyball marathon being held to raise funds for the Dar tal-Providenza kicked off this evening as President George Abela blew the whistle.

First to serve was Frankie Bonello, a resident at the home. A minute of silence was observed in remembrance of Tamara Psaila, the young woman who lost her life a few days ago during a dive organised to collect funds for the home.

More than 200 volunteers and 35 players are taking part. The players started training more than a month ago dedicating a minimum of eight hours a week.

The marathon has been organised by Dar tal-Providenza, five years after the last fund-raising marathon for the Home was held by the Kerygma Movement. The home needs €13,000 per day.

The marathon comes to an end on Sunday at 11 p.m.

Donations can be made on 5004 9553 (€7); 5004 9555 (€12); and 50049550 (€23). Meanwhile, €7 SMS donations can be made on 5061 8938.
