Solar, wind and biomass are three renewable energy sources that should be seriously considered in Malta.
Solar power plants indirectly generate electricity when the heat from solar thermal collectors is used to heat a fluid that produces steam to turn turbines for power electricity generation. Such solar power stations exist in California and Arizona. This kind of a solar power plant may be suitable for Malta due to our sunny climate.
Understandably, it should be a part of our electricity generation capability, as solar energy is not constant but depends on weather conditions.
The future site for a solar power plant may possibly be the site of the Marsa power station.
Solar energy is free and its supplies are unlimited. It does not pollute the environment and does not emit greenhouse gases. Together with wind farms and solar panels, a solar power plant should be given serious consideration with a view to meeting Malta's obligations for renewable energy.
