Żminijietna - Voice of the Left does not agree with the bye-laws suggested by the Mellieħa local council to stop barbeques and camps at Għadira Bay.

Public beaches should serve as a recreation area. It's ironic that the council, which is there for the public, is proposing that the public should be allowed less space for recreation, especially in times of an increasing cost of living.

If some people pollute beaches in such activities, there should be more bins catering for charcoal residual and more enforcement by environmental wardens, whose service is quite scarce in Malta.

We believe it would be better if the Mellieħa council took a clear position on developments that are raising eyebrows.

These include the develop-ment of hotels near the coast and the proposal of Għadira road, which lacks any scientific study.

Where was the council when the valley at Mellieħa was being destroyed?

Embellishment of public spaces should not lead to privatisation and less public access.
