A Dutch couple is to be prosecuted in The Netherlands over allegations that they bought a Belgian baby on the internet, authorities said.

The child, dubbed Baby Jayden in the media, was taken from the Dutch couple and handed over to Belgian authorities last December.

The Dutch couple, who are reportedly unable to have children of their own, made contact with the boy's biological mother after seeing a web advertisement, and took him a few hours after he was born in a hospital in Ghent, in the Dutch-speaking Flanders region of Belgium, in July last year.

Dutch media have claimed that the couple paid the child's biological parents between €5,000 and €10,000.
