More students in higher education are to become eligible for stipends as from October, Education Minister Dolores Cristina said this afternoon.

They include the Pathways students at MCAST and students aged over 30 who, as a rule were, to date, not given maintenance grants.

Mrs Cristina made the announcement during a visit to the Junior College at Msida, where the building is being extended in a €1.5 million project which includes eight lecture rooms and 20 tutorial rooms. The project includes energy saving measures such as insulated roofs and double glazing. The project is being financed through EU funds.

She pointed out that the student population had doubled in the past 14 years. There were 3,024 students at the Junior College last year.
