A married couple was given a suspended jail term after assaulting a police officer at a wedding they were invited to on Sunday at about midnight.

Police Constable George Buhagiar stopped Ivan Pirotta, 31, from returning into the wedding hall at Villa Oriana in Buskett after having been on the terrace because the man was drunk. His 33-year-old wife Rhodian intervened trying to push past the officer and get her husband inside. The couple were ordered not to get in but did not obey and the officer arrested them. In the arraignment, a few hours later on Sunday morning, the Qormi couple admitted to assaulting PC Buhagiar, threatening the officer, disobeying police orders and breaching public peace.

Magistrate Antonio Micallef Trigona handed down a six-month jail term suspended for one year to Mr Pirotta while his wife was given a three-month jail term also suspended for one year.

Lawyer Mark Busuttil appeared for the couple.
