Call for prevention plan to deal with domestic violence
The National Council of Women has called for a multidisciplinary prevention plan to deal with domestic violence.
The council said it was deeply concerned with the rise in domestic violence, which often resulted in brutal deaths due to problems between couples.
Their statement comes after a 47-year-old man was charged with stabbing his wife to death in broad daylight in the middle of a Tarxien street last Monday.
The council said that while initiatives were taken to assist victims, there was still much to be done to prevent these incidents.
It reiterated its call for a national detection policy to identify signs of domestic violence in its early stages.
The council said the country was also in dire need of an ongoing national information campaign for potential aggressors and victims on where to seek professional assistance.
"Raising awareness of domestic violence is not a one day event, it needs to be addressed from one day to another and not hide it for the rest of the year," it said.

Domestic violence is part of the whole picture .Accumulated anger becomes a crime whether it is at home ,in the extended family ,on the place of work or anwhere where there is the possibility of jeolousy , hatred or the morbid state of psychopathology. The problem is vast and needs to be recognised. A problem cannot be solved unless it is owned because it is recognised. Behavioural symptoms of anger which may lead to violence should be stopped whether they are physical or psychological. Firstly the public should be educated about fundamental human rights and transgressing them cannot be overlooked anywhere or at any time. A cultural observance of the rights of others will diminish a lot of violence. Although some still remains. Persistent persecution of a person is stalking and constitutes a crime. This is also violence and a morbid state of hidden anger. We cannot allow such behaviour in one place and hope to eradicate it in another. The principle of the human rights and dignity of the person should prevail over everything and everyone. Let us build a culture of respect for the human person.
