I was glad to get back home from abroad and this for a number of reasons but mainly after reading about the San Ġwann cart ruts. Finally things are beginning to move and in the right direction.

More than a place of relaxation, this site has been crying out for some kind of rehabilitation and preservation for posterity, being the oldest historical monument and the only place of interest for tourists in our locality. In the past we had plenty of plans and even tangible ideas from the University students of architecture, among them overlying bridges to prevent people from walking over them. It should be an archaeological pleasure garden with trees and walls that do not jar with the environment.

Maintenance must be continuous so that neither weeds nor dog poop will continue to mar the whole site. The local council must be prepared to send the occasional warden to check those dog owners who keep abusing in a regular manner. It is also good news that the garden at Triq l-Istefanotis is finally going to become a reality. Here again there have been so many plans and designs and nothing came to fruition.

My only wish is that both places will be a pleasure to behold and to enjoy when they are ready, but please, with no replicas of monuments like the present "monument" in Ġnien il-Warda.
