The fire brigade of the Civil Protection Department had a very busy weekend, its fire engines being called out some 60 times to tackle grass fires in Malta and Gozo between yesterday and this afternoon.

One of the biggest fires was that at Handaq, Qormi, where fire fighters had to remain on site for hours, their work made difficult by the strong wind which fanned the flames close to parked cars (See video).

A number of straw bales were destroyed in Zurrieq this afternoon while a smaller blaze needed quick attention as it gained hold as a result of rubbish between garages in Luqa.
