I have just returned from my first visit to Għajn Tuffieħa beach this summer and I was shocked and disgusted by what I found.
First, the sandy beach has been reduced to almost half of what it was last summer owing to the large number of stones, rocks and pebbles which nature has deposited in the bay.
I admit that this is not the act of man but the litter scattered around is. I tried to take a picture of all the rubbish, plastic bottles and other trash left by irresponsible revellers but I couldn't capture the whole beach.
The picture shows just a small section where I had to set up my umbrella. As one can see while the sand is littered with bottles, cans, plastic cups and pieces of cloth, the litter bin is empty!
Some time after I took the picture, a group of men came and emptied the other litter bins so this particular bin must have been empty as these litter bugs were partying.
I think that the time for educating these people is over and now is the time to start handing out very severe punishment in the form of hefty fines.
The only way to some Maltese brains is through their pocket.
