Mgr Alfred Xuereb, Pope Benedict's secretary, celebrated Mass to mark his 25th anniversary of his ordination at St George's basilica last Sunday.

Mgr Xuereb, who is honorary canon at St George's, was assisted by Mgr Georg Gänswein, personal assistant to the Pope, archpriest Paul Cardona, Mgr Joseph Farrugia and the basilica chapter.

Apostolic nuncio Tommaso Caputo read a message by Pope Benedict, while Bishop Nikol Cauchi, who had ordained Mgr Xuereb on May 26, 1984, delivered the homily. Gozo Bishop Mario Grech also attended.

Mgr Xuereb presented a chasuble bearing the Pope's coat of arms to the basilica. The Laudate Pueri choir took part.

Following Mass a lunch was held at the parish house.
