Iceland today handed in an application for accession to the European Union to the Swedish EU presidency, an Icelandic foreign ministry spokesman said.

"The (Icelandic) ambassador to Sweden has met with the secretary of state and has handed in to him the application of accession to the EU," said Urdur Gunnarsdottir.

"The ambassador to the EU has at the same time in Brussels met with officials in the European Commission to inform them of the same," Ms Gunnarsdottir said.
