Piano's latest plans 'a big improvement'
Renzo Piano's proposals for the reconstruction of City Gate and Freedom Square, in Valletta are a big improvement on those he had originally presented, according to Fondazzjoni Wirt Artna.
It said that the plans as presented suggested the retention and conservation of all the elements of heritage within the scope of the project which were endangered. The overall nature of the project was impressive despite being overtly minimalistic in its nature, it added.
However, it said the panoramic lift from the ditch to the main entrance would look unsightly and would disrupt the continuous homogeneity of the restored curtain wall. This facility could easily be accommodated within the wall thickness, FWA said.

For 65 years we've been waiting for successive governments to remove that festering sore, namely the ex-Teatru Rjal. The Germans even paid for it to be rebuilt. Now comes Piano and he proposes we keep it for eternity as if it were the Coleseum. How preposterous. The site should be cleared and rebuilt in a style that befits Valletta. It need not be an opera house. It could, perhaps, be a concert hall with an adjoining music academy; or maybe a museum of melitensia. What's important is that we get rid of that unsightly ruin at the entrance to Valletta.

We should have aimed at having a really fantastic plan that really placed Valletta on the map, however it seems that we are again being tricked by Dr. Gonzi alienating strategy and Mr Piano's plans. One word wraps it all: FOOLTASTIC

A gate is a gate and a breach is a breach. Let's stop calling it a gate if it's going to be a breach. I suggest someone starts a petition to see if we would like a gate or a breach. A petition worked when many were against the planned museum for St John's

Allura if Piano was WRONG THEN how come many say that he absolutely cannot be WRONG NOW????
Their ONLY reason...he is Piano!!!!
And they blindly accept an oversized aquarium (together with plastic seats and roofless) as a national theatre. Not mentioning a gateless Citygate, Parliament to replace one of the only two open spaces we have in Valletta, etc, etc

What heritage?
A City Gate without a Gate, a Parliament on stilts and a Roofless Theatre

Fondazzjoni Wirt Artna.say "the panoramic lift from the ditch to the main entrance would look unsightly and would disrupt the continuous homogeneity of the restored curtain wall."Din l-art helwa comment about the height of the proposed parliament building. As for the opera house ruins, since when has going topless been encouraged in Malta.
Third time lucky Mr. Piano.

All Valletta needs renovation. Agreed. Re Paino's plan, its modern and better than the previous one, no doubt, but still without a gate. It's a breach!

Piano's plans have now been discussed by everyone,,, experts and the general pubic and there is wide consensus that they are good, if not brilliant.
of course there are the smaller objections here and there and in some detail. but this is understandable.
i tend to agree with the lift objection/proposal by FWA (but i can live with that).
lets trust the man,,,, after all he tends to come up with impressive stuff.
