The Catania port authorities have launched a search for human traffickers after a group of 50 illegal immigrants were sighted in Syracuse by a man, the Corriere della Sera reported on its website.

The man, who was driving along the motorway that leads from the lido the Noto to the Vendicari natural reserve, came across the group of immigrants at around 4.30 a.m. as they were crossing the street, a report on www.agi.it said.

A patrol boat left Syracuse in search of the human traffickers along the coast adjacent to the strada di Noto Marina. Patrols by the Carabinieri and Italian police were also dispatched.
