Valletta have stayed in contention to reach the third qualifying round of the Europa League after gaining a 1-1 draw against Irish side St Patrick’s in the first leg of their second round tie at Richmond Park this evening.

St Patrick’s opened the scoring seven minutes from the end of the first half when new signing Declan O’Brien poked home from close range following a goalmouth scramble in the City box.

Having been second best in the first half, Valletta started the second period in lively fashion.

Their efforts produced an equaliser 20 minutes into the second half when captain Gilbert Agius drilled the ball home after receiving a cut-back from Dutch striker Geert den Ouden.

The second leg is next Thursday at the Centenary Stadium.
