Last season, Liverpool made it to the very top of the English Premiership scoring ladder after a lapse of 17 years. The last time they finished on top of the heap was 1990-91 when they had an average of 2.03 − the same as last season.

In 1991, Liverpool had finished runners-up in this list, to champions Arsenal.

Their main Premier League scorers in 2008/09 were Steven Gerrard on 16, Fernando Torres, 14, and Dirk Kuyt, 12.

In the top flight, the total of 942 goals is 60 down on the previous campaign. From the remaining divisions only League One showed an increase, yet the total score aggregate of 5,182 is 24 goals above the preceding season.

Clubs in the Premiership that showed an increase on their former totals were Bolton, Chelsea, Fulham, Liverpool and Manchester City. The biggest increase was that of City with 13 more nettings on season 2007-08.

The total of 5,182 goals in digits by the end of season 2008-09 reads:

Premiership: 942 - an average of 2.48 goals per match (previous season: 1,002 - average 2.64).

The Championship: 1,350 - an average of 2.44 goals per match (previous season: 1,394 - average 2.52).

League One: 1,516 - an average of 2.75 goals per match (previous season: 1,335 - average 2.42).

League Two: 1,374 - an average of 2.49 goals per match (previous season: 1,427 - average 2.58).
