Two accused of importing drugs

A Dominican woman and a Ghanaian man were yesterday charged with importing almost two kilos of heroin and 3,000 ecstasy pills.

The two, who reside in Barcelona, were arrested separately when they arrived in Malta on a flight from Brussels on Monday at 11 p.m. No link between the two emerged so far.

Sugeidy Margarita Novas Castillo, 21, was charged with importing a kilo of heroin and 3,000 ecstasy pills, which Customs officers allegedly found hidden in a false bottom of her luggage.

In a separate case, 33-year-old Stephen Nana Owusu was charged with importing 750 grammes of heroin by swallowing 74 capsules, each containing 10 grammes of the drug.

Mr Owusu released the capsules at Mater Dei Hospital where he was taken after being stopped by Customs' officers, the police said in a statement.

Both Ms Castillo and Mr Owusu were also charged with conspiring to deal in the drugs and with their possession with intent to sell.

They pleaded not guilty to the charges and Magistrate Audrey Demicoli remanded both in police custody.

Police Inspector Johann J. Fenech prosecuted.

Lawyer Renzo Porsella Flores appeared for the accused.
