Price levels for consumer goods and services in Malta are below the EU average , a Eurostat survey has found. However, consumer electronics were most expensive in Malta.

The survey found that price levels in Malta stood at 78 percent the EU average higher than in Estonia, Latvia, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Slovakia, Bulgaria, Romania, Lithuania and Poland but lower than in the remaining countries of the bloc.

The highest price levels, at 141 percent, were registered in Denmark, followed by Ireland - 127 percent and Finland, 125 percent.

The cost of consumer electronics was highest in Malta, at 126 percent, and lowest in the UK, 86 percent.

For alcoholic beverages and tobacco, prices were lowest in Romania (61 percent of the average) and highest in Ireland (184 percent). This large price variation was mainly due to taxation.

The smallest price variation was in clothing with this being cheapest in the United Kingdom (83 percent of the average) and most expensive in Finland (123 percent).

For restaurants and hotels, price levels ranged from 40 percent of the average in Bulgaria to 151 percent in Denmark.
