Attard council condemns vandalism
The Attard council this morning condemned vandalism in Tumas Dingli Square last night.
A spokesman for the council told timesofmalta.com when the council's works coordinator was carrying out his usual inspection around the locality at 6.30 a.m., he noticed that the columns at the back of the square had been broken.
He informed the council, which in turn informed the police.

A couple of days ago i personally saw two foreign male students trying to uproot a local council sign outside a nearby public garden. A passing public spirited gentleman bothered to phone the police and even gave the police the number of the transport van that picked them up. I wonder if any action was taken!

Dear Mr Bonello
Kindly note that we as constructors of the stage has nothing to do with the removal of the balustrades. These were removed and reconstructed by the local council. Please also note that we had all the required permits to organize such event. Please refrain from making any allegations against our company.

If I'm not mistaken some of the balustrade was actually removed last week for a large stage to be set up....for a day or so I really thought Joseph Calleja was doing a free concert in his home town. This stage construction took place Wed to Fri when there was an outdoor mass celebrating a new priest or something like that (never mind the effort taken and the inconvenience caused when one of Malta's most beautiful parish churches is next door, and a large, modern parish hall sits next to the church...but that's Maltese logic for you!). So... the outdoor mass was on Friday but the loose masonry sat around till the following Monday...obviously proving too easy a temptation for whoever continued the fracas already started by the stage construction guys. Oh never mind - the balustrade has been repaired though it looks like a quick ejja ha mmorru type of job

By 10.30p.m.(yesterday) this act of vandilism was already committed. Shame! But then the Police Station just round the corner is always closed. Why not install a CCTV camera in this area? This square is being vandilised every day, in the sense that instead of being a place for relaxation, as it is intended to be, it is being used (especially in the evenings) by youths to play football, skate-boarding, bycicles etc. being a nuisance and dangerous to whoever is in the square and to passers-by.

Did I get you right? Are you saying that the mess in the picture is a result of a broken family??

The main problem is because of a complete lack of parental control. Everyday, everywhere, one can see bad behaviour by children, but one rarely sees the parents correct their children, or say that magic word....no. Children appear to control the parents !!!!!

I am sure that 99% of the inhabitants of Attard join their Council in condemning this act of vandalism. Surely, despite everything, nobody is in such dire straits as to need to nick a few stone balustrades? On the other hand, we must not forget that "quiet" little Attard has its own bad eggs who occasionally make their presence felt.

Are you sure it happened last night? I noticed that some maisonary had been removed and stored on the side last Saturday evening after mass. I actually thought some "work in progress" was in hand and that the council was aware of the works. I too recommend that CCTV should be installed in the area (esp in the passage way leading to the chapel where the Sacrament is exposed for adoration).

This is not the first time that damages are done to public property and every time who he is goes scott free. I cannot understand why the police station, now that Attard is more than 10,000 in population, is not open everyday like in other villages and the police make their patrol regularly. Security cameras should be installed in these places at least as a deterrent. I hope that these things will not continue to happen in the future....

I will hazard a guess (likely to be 99% correct) and state that this is probably the work of youth vandals. I live in close vicinity to a playground in Qawra which is in a continual state of shambles mostly due to gangs of youths (male and female) who gather there daily and continually wreak havoc. The fountain is always filled with rubbish and every piece of apparatus and every piece of stonework has been vandalised. Additionally, the area always looks like a rubbish dump with all sorts of food litter (bottles, packets, scraps of food). In addition, their language (both male and female) is of the foulest and dirtiest possible extending to the late night hours, especially in summer. The Police - I have given up imploring them to visit and take action - they never do. Tell the Council - a waste of time because they refer you back to the Police. The playground should be fenced and locked, barred and bolted at night. This country has reached an unfortunate point where everything has to be placed under the scrutiny of cctv cameras.

PM Camilleri Come on...vandalism is a sign of ignrance that's it...and it is very easy to knock over things in a few minutes in the dead of the night without getting caught anyway... so no more fantasies about setting up a big brother police state please because of some ignorant people who go around looking for things to vandalise....

There is something very wrong with this country. Totally agree! This is also very worrying. The mentality is trash and vandalise because the law is above us!!! Makes me wonder why places like Saudi Arabia are immaculate with hardly any vandalism. We know what the consequences are if this happens in SA.

The Police cannot be everywhere all the time.
I think that the time for small one officer police stations is over. in this time and age we do not need micro police stations. A fully equipped vehicle on patrol could do a more efficient job. Today one can have online reporting facilities in a vehicle sith the use of a simple laptop computer. in this manner a vehicle can be dispatched anywhere and officers can draw up reports which could be instantly dispatched to the concerned police section for immediate action. One officer police stations were needed years ago when communication was difficult. But today nearly every person has a cell phone, and every building has a land line. If an emergency or a scuffle occurs, the policeman on his own in a station would invariably request assistance, so what is gthe use for a single officer station when a well equipped vehicle with two or theree officer would do the job more efficiently and effectively?

Install CCTV cameras. There is something very wrong with this country. And I know what it is. The gradual breakup of the family as we know it and of moral values.
