Naxxar sewage blockage spread to Qormi
Straw and other material which blocked a sewage gallery and caused a major overflow in Naxxar yesterday afternoon was carried in the system and also caused an overflow in Valletta Road, Qormi later in the day, the Water Services Corporation said this afternoon.
The overflow at Naxxar took place at 1.30 p.m., with the sewage flowing all the way down to Lija.
WSC workers were kept busy up to 11 p.m., clearing the blockage and cleaning the streets using five specialised jetting bowsers to disinfected the affected areas.
The blockage at Qormi was cleared by 8 p.m and the area was washed and disinfectant at around midnight. During the clearing operation in Qormi rags and even rope were found blocking the system.
WSC Chief Executive Marc Muscat said that these episodes had cost the corporation much time, money and resources, not to mention the inconvenience caused to residents and motorists. He urged the public not to dump materials such as oils, fats, rags and straw into the sewers and to report any abuse on 8007 2222.

He the guys in the picture deserve an extra month paid up leave, extra bonus, danger money, paid up life insurance, but most RESPECT! If they don't know the potenial hazard of the mess they worked in, at least the management could have taken some measures, or... Health & Safety bla bla bla... Even Unions didn't speak up on this issue, less any other TAX supported authority! Shame!

Is WSC sure this was not sabotage??? Seeing the extent of the damages and the financial losses sustained during the summer months, I believe that a deeper investigation into the causes and the perpatrators of this ought to be carried out.

why are the workers not wearing proper protection?!! I know it's very hot outside but they should be wearing sanitation suits with an emergency gas mask on the ready.
It's astounding that we are little different then india and how it treats one of the lowest castes of the untouchables … the sewer workers

seems like we forgot the case of the three workers who died a few summers ago…

Can anyone understand why these men are allowed to work without gloves in these situations?

Recently it has become mandatory for farm manure especially cow dung to be collected by bowser and dumped into specified sites in the main sewer.
As rightly mentioned the use of suction bowsers to empty the cesspit at the farm allows all sorts of material to be collected. It is a known fact that cows tend to eat less in hot weather and so most straw ends up as manure without it passing through the animal's digestive system with all the consequences that this creates. I see no link between the Qormi and Naxxar incidents as, as far as logic permits Naxxar sewage does not pass through Qormi, but then the WSC knows better!! The only link could be that the sewer system was not designed to take whole straw, and some changes need to be made.
I can not understand how nobody has considered converting this manure into energy. I have seen such home made biomass energy converters when I visited India way back in 1982!! I am not suggesting that we start experimenting in an amaturish way as we might blow up a few properties, but on a National scale WSC or Wasteserv should look into it.

@ victor vella. The place you mentioned at Pieta' is the restaurant's cesspit. The bowser collects sewer and not deposits it there.

Come on Naxxar sewage was blocked by straws and manure. Even the smell can tell that. We had to close our window and get out of our houses that's how how strong the smell was.

@ Victor Vella
You asked why? Simple - some people are uneducated that's why. It does not even cross their mind that they are doing something wrong.

It is a well known fact that sucktion bowsers colect all kinds of stone and material from the cesspits they go to clean, they are also used to clear blockages, now why was such a bowser emptying it's load near the new restaurant at San Masion this week?
