Updated: Motorcyclist dies in St Julian's crash
A 24-year-old motorcyclist from Kalkara, Daniel Aquilina, died last night when his motorcycle crashed into a tree at Triq Mikiel Anton Vassalli in St Julian's, the police said.
The incident happened at about 11.30 p.m.
The police said the Yamaha motorcycle crashed into a tree and the driver ended up on the centre strip, several metres away. Efforts to save him proved futile and he died shortly afterwards in hospital.
Friends of the victim said Daniel was a cheerful man, "always smiling, on-the-go and happy-go-lucky".
Magistrate Giovanni Grixti is holding an inquiry.

I agree with Kutluhan.... I live close to the Msida tunnels (University side) and every night, I can hear cars & bikes racing and revving their engines under the tunnels. It should not be a very difficult task for the authorities to monitor this area during the night and book those overspeeding.
So Police please make a move and make our streets safer!!

Daniel was loved by a lot of people, it also showed this morning at Kalkara Parish Church, where a lot of people came to say their last goodbye. He had a very sweet and loving Character and was always there to help. His tragic death shocked us all. We will cherish his memory for ever.
Our sincere condolences go to his family and may God be with them through this difficult time.
Daniel until we meet again RIP

@Alishia Xuereb Jones, Dear Alishia, my purpose of writing all these details is not to hurt anyone or give either Daniel's family or his friends more pain. As a witness to the sad event, since that time i freak out each time i hear the revving cars and motorbikes inside tunnel when i am at home and have the fear that they will crash too. By writing these lines i wanted to especially show the bikers show terrible it is in fact to be involved in a bike crash. If i can have an effect at elast on one biker or a driver and make them ride or drive slowerand prevent an accident, maybe by doing so i might have saved a life of a person who i don't even know.Sorry for the inconvenience i have caused to all readers here but unfortunately truth is sometimes very bitter!!

I knew Daniel when he was an altar boy together with my son Matthew. I knew him better when I called him together with his brother Alessio to play for the Abbatini's team which I was coaching at the time. We had some very special moments together. He was overjoyed when we succeded in winning the Abbatini National Championship. Daniel was always the first one to make us laugh even at tense moments. Daniel keep on smiling, keep on helping, keep on being our friend and please pray for us from up in heaven were you belong. Everyone who knows you will be missing you. My condolences go to his parents and his brother Alessio and all Daniel's loved ones.

@ Kutluhan Batu I agree with you. I read an interesting report a long time ago that linked higher accident rates and fatalities with the introduction of better quality roads.
When I catch myself speeding in towns and villages, I try to imagine a kid jumping out of nowhere in front of my car. Helps me slow down to a safe speed. Main roads are a bit difficult to keep with the local speed limit though. AFAIK on the main roads we have a slower speed limit than in Britain's country lanes!

@Alishia: your love and respect to Daniel has got nothing to do with what Kutluhan wrote: he also is showing grief to this death and is stating facts, but not out of disrespect for Daniel.

just wanted to comment about what Kutluhan Batu has written. its very insensitive of you to have written in such detail about daniel's last moments. For all the people who knew and loved daniel, we would prefer to remember him as the fun loving guy that he was and not have any negative mental images imposed on us by a very cruel reaccount of the event.
Daniel i will always love you as my closest friend!! can't believe i will never spend hours chatting with you again. Wait for me in heaven and once im there next to you keep your promise and take me for a ride with your bike there. xxxxx

I remeber when i started driving at 14 and started riding at 21-22. I wanted to go faster and faster and faster no speed was enough for me.
People here in Malta drive and ride very very dangerously, that is the thing that should be changed even before the roads.
Wake up Malta, before it is too late.
I wote all these with the hope that maybe one of the readers will wake up and realise the dangers of speeding.Once again my condolences to Daniel's family.

I am Turkish by the way and i live in Dubai. Since i came i have been noticing that the quality of the roads in Malta is terrible, one of the worst that i have seen in the world. I travel alot beacuse of my job and i saw many many places, i think in Africa the roads are like this, ah one more place, Turkey.Yes unfortunately in my home country roads are exactly the same like this, lots of pot holes, very very slippery surfaces especaially in summer and rain which makes bikers job very hard to either stop or corner.I also complain about the road quality back home that there is no grip at all but listen to this now.
In Dubai it is the opposit, road quality is very very good despite the heat and it gives you lot of grip and stopping power. That should stop the accidents right. NO! It only allows yo to go even faster, tackle corners even harder, brake harder. Dubai has one of the highest death rates in the world thanks to the high quality roads.Roads or barriers are not the solution.

The ambulance came from the other side, dropped the paramedics and they started doing cpr immediately. Before i could see from a distance that he was breathing but now i could not see his chest rising anymore. They continued cpr till the ambulance came back and they put him in the car but i could see he was unconscious and possibly not breathing. Cpr continued in the ambulance as well.
It was a very unpleasnt scene for me to see and i am sure that the pain his family and friend are having istoo much these days. When i read some of the comments on this page i felt the urge that i should write about this. I have been thinking about the crash for the last two days and i event went to the scene to see and imagine how the crash possibly happened. And now for me the puzzle is solved.
I got quite upset when i see the comments especially from bikers that they blame the roads for this and other crashes here in Malta. Now lt me say, i have been on holiday here since 2nd July with my wife.

There was cloud of dust outside and i knew it was serious out there. It took me about 3 minutes to get to the scene after the crash, and i was suprised that police was already there to direct the cars. First i saw the bike, resting on its left side, fuel tank missing from the chassis made me think that it was a powerful crash. I kept walking then i saw Daniel lying on the middle strip in front of the tree he crahed in to.
His other biker friend was there trying to make phone calls and a few other people. I stood about 5 meters away on the far lane as the people tried to speak to him, i could see that he was breathing but very deeply and rapidly. I don't think that he was able to reply back to them. I did not know then that he had crashed in to the tree, i was trying to understand how it happened and i assumed that since i see no blood he msut have had crashed in to the tree and possibly he had lots of broken bones and internal bleeding.

First of all i would like to give my sincere condolences to Daniel's family, and may Allah, god be with them. I did not know Daniel however i happened to have witnessed the moments of him about just three minutes after the crash. I was watching a movie at home with my wife and i heard the bikes inside the tunnel. I am a biker as well so i know the pleasure it gives the rider when you go through a tunnel. The noise of the exhaust doubles or even triples in the tunnels.
I was expecting the bikes to get of the tunnel and pass by my window however suddenly i heard screeching noises from outside and i knew that he had crashed. I crashed before as well in to a car from behind and i know how it feels. I have first aid training so i decided to go out and help.

Why is it we have to blame someone or something everytime a fatal accident occurs. Unfortunately accidents do happen and some of them could be deadly. I did not know him, but from what friends of Daniel's have been writing, he was a lively, kind and down to earth bloke, so I suggest that at this instance, instead of pointing fingers and blaming this that and the other, one should just think of him and his family in his prayers. Rest in peace Daniel.

There is no way to justify, and no relief from knowing why. Daniel and Chris (who died in a traffic accident on Sept. 20, 2006 along the Coast Road) were friends. Both good boys, caring and so loved. Both taken by tragic road accidents. We have to believe that They have found each other again. I share your pain and your anger. We are not prepared to lose our children. I feel Chris always. When are our stupid road going to be safe for drivers? and more so for us motorcyclists???
I am a biker myself and belive me our roads are killers. When your driving they shine like mirrors especially at this time of the year.NO GRIP AT ALL!! besides the potholes, tarmac melting with heat and forming moonlike crevices, and yet some smart opinionist comes along and blame the bikers of overspeeding!!!
I am not saying we do not have speed happy immature riders but 90% of the accidents involving bikers is not our fault.Everything is against us and sometimes even car drivers are careless of the danger we face!!!
May this yong man rest in peace and his family find comfort in this hard time and great loss!!

Of course, it is undeniable that a bike is more dangerous than a car but so much can be done to reduce the risks particularly at a time when we should be thinking about encouraging the use of bikes for environmental reasons. Bike owners know that the single most dangerous thing is the road surface. Quite apart from the potholes and uneven road surfaces, Maltese roads are not as abrasive as those overseas and road holding is therefore seriously compromised. Most other dangers are controllable (e.g. waiting in traffic rather than zig-zagging around stationary motor cars).
What I would like to add is that it is always sad when a fellow biker loses his life especially since most of the time it could have been avoided. Prayers for Daniel and his family are obviously solicited.

When you own and drive a bike, it unfortunately is a matter of when it will happen and not if. Road design, quality, diesel, pot holes, dangerous manouvers by cars, overspeeding, tiredness are all against the motorcyclist.
I think bikes are cool an am always so close to buying one, but then I reason the risks associated with such a device and always stop short of buying a bike. Yes, cars are dangerous as well and we had a perfect example last week, but bikes carry the added risk. This apart from the frequent, thankfully unfatal, accidents that occur where the driver survives but in bad shape.
Would be bike owners, beware, that the cool bike could come at a dear cost of your life - even if you drive the most cautious driving in the world. A car might give you a 2nd chance, but bikes give you less than that.

Our prayers to the victim and his poor family.
- - - -
It may not seem right, but if the discussion can lead to safer roads, then so be it, perhaps this young person would not have died in vain.
Trees, pylons, electricity poles, columns...they are all quite dangerous by the roadside. When Lady Diana had her fatal accident, she was in one of the safest cars at that time.
However, the poor design of the Paris tunnel (deadly concrete columns all the way) ensured that an otherwise simple accident ended up in a tragedy. While a smooth wall would have allowed the car to slide to a halt, albeit with some impact (given the speed), the square colums instead gave way for a very violent impact.
In 10 or so years marshaling motor racing events, I had always given special care to such potentially dangerous objects, insulating these with tyres and other absorbing materials.
Of course, we cannot do this on our daily roads, but perhaps guard-rails could help.
Up to a limit though, as when one is travelling on a bike, hitting anything would really hurt, as Joseph Attard rightly said earlier on.

For all you guys who have been commenting! Please stop the debate about the trees, and speed limit and all that. It just HADTO HAPPEN! As a dear friend alreaady said, Danny was never the type of guy that likes to impress people and drive wrecklessly, he was always a caring, respectful and loving guy. Always with a smiel and ready to help when you re in need. So for all those who are arguing about trees and speed limits- please give the people who are close to him a break! because its all in vain and its really not the time. I was shocked when i heard and im still under shock now - i know that his closest friends and family are really lost right now. So may god rest his soul and lets blame no one for the accident. he was driving like he drove any other day, when we all saw him! like any other day when d tarmac was how it was, and where the tree was standing exactly were it was. Soo in my opinion, we re all in d hands of god. let s all remeber danny as we knew him!

Though the issue of speed is always subject to controversy after such accidents, everyone knows that most of our roads are still not up to standard especially for motorbike driving. I can say this through experience since I drive a 300cc motorbike practically everyday. Roads are so dangerous to us as bikers. Let's hope one day Malta will have a road network fully up to EU standards.RIP Daniel.

Unfortunately crash barriers are just as dangerous to bikers as trees. Bikes tend to fall and slide with the rider hitting the vertical beams supporting the barriers. In some countries thick rubber cladding is sometimes placed around these beams to protect bikers.
My heartfelt sympathy goes to Daniel's family and friends.

Yeah right....blame the trees.
Mind you I'm not pointing any fingers, but blaming the trees is ridiculous.

@Mark Attard. First of all I am shocked! OK? Secondly, I own a bike myself, and I know what it feels like.
The tarmac is admittedly bad, but please please, let us be more careful in our driving. Speeding is rife in Malta and I do not want to hear anybody say it is not true. Let us be honest with ourselves here.
Just go to the road adjacent to gudja airportvrunway, and you will see what I mean. This is in a 60km/h zone..but nobody on a bike respects it. I live in Joann Garden Tarxien, and even there drivers drive us crazy with their speeding in a residential area.
Just two questions. How many moped or scooter drivers lose their life? How many high-powered bike drivers lose their life?
Please note that I am deeply sad about this loss of life...first Tamara on Sunday, now Daniel...too much to bear...RIP my friends.....

Could people please stop the comments about driving and high speeds. Firstly the bike was meters from Daniel a 20kph accident can cause this being thrown at high speeds would mean a greater distance, secondly if you knew Daniel at all you would know that he was not the "ride to die" type. Just because you ride a bike doesn't mean you have a 200 MPH death wish. Daniel will be missed by us all, if only I knew at 16:30 yesterday that it would be the last time I would see him. Its a sad loss of a young life, but alot of Maltese driving these bikes in my opinion are taken their life into their own hands, Malta has the weather but its not suitabe for Bikes of this caliber and the way they zoom by is a danger to themselves and the other road users, but as they say its a free country, had it been in the UK or any long strech of road in an EU country i say yes by all means but countries like Malta.. its an accident ready to Happen, and when it does happen, we all know the answer to that, one can only count the ampteen R.I.P. reminders on the Maltese roads, funny enough Gozo seems to be better equipped but then again we see people open the driver's door wide open when an on coming vehicles are heading in the same direction, just as dangerous, but as our Maltese friends tells * THIS IS MALTA/GOZO, well rather them then me i say, i use my brain that god has given me . One live an learn unfortunitly the hard way, but by then its all too late.

Here we go again - blame it on the speed and racing style bikes... you should rather blame it on the tarmac not on the poor guy.
Is your imagination a speed camera?
Do you know that that tarmac there even lets you loose traction even at 40kph while the speed limit is 60??
If you get a hi-side at 60kph you do end up several meters away Chris. If he had a hi-side while OVERSPEEDING (he would have known this is a killer) he would have ended up some hundreds of meters away, which is certainly not the case.

A sad loss of life.
Trees are deadly and a road barrier can save lives if a car is involved. Unfortunately in the case of a bike, regardless of what you're going to hit, it will seriously hurt!

Could you people stop commenting on everything ... these are tragic deaths ... respect the victim!!!

The killer trees strike again!
Not knowing the full facts one should refrain from commenting.
However this IS the second (or rather third) death in as many days, in as many days.involving trees.
Is a rethink concerning roadside trees neccesary?
Did our 'State of the Art' roads contribute to this motorcyclist's untimely demise?
Must we still embrace the death penalty for driving accidents, whatever the cause?
My deepest condolences go out to his loved ones and may he find decent riding roads in the afterlife. We certaibly don't have them here!

Regardless of speed, road surface ecc, how many more people must die before this government realises that trees in a road (without barriers) are a sure killer?
Maybe with a barrier, and of course proper clothing (not like many drivers we see on the road, a t-shirt and shorts), some of these fatalities can be reduced.
Sadly, on the other hand, we all know that despite all excuses, many motorcyclists having 'racing style' bikes, simply push them too hard. Finishing several metres away from the crash site can only indicate a high speed crash, no matter what anyone says..
Too bad really. A young life shorn away, so many hopes and dreams now gone ... sincere commiserations and prayers to his family, and for the repose of his soul.
