On July 2, the proprietor of an outlet from where I do my daily shopping handed me a large white envelope (A4) which was clearly and correctly addressed to me.

He told me that the white envelope had been posted in an old lady's letterbox who is nearly housebound and who lives in the area.

Realising that it was not hers, the old lady gave it to a friend to do something about it. On seeing the address on the envelope, the latter realised that it belonged to me and since she knows me and by and large knows my daily morning whereabouts, left the letter with the shop's owner, who as I already said, sees me every day.

The postmark on the envelope read CMR Marsa 7 p.m. June 24.

This means the letter took nine days to reach me, both dates inclusive. Luckily, although the contents were important, it was not of an urgent nature.

I do not need to elaborate further as by now, everyone knows that Maltapost is inefficient, especially, in this case, when one considers that the letter in question was a large A4 envelope.

The number of letters appearing in the press complaining of mail going astray or lost, which could turn out to be very detrimental to the receiver, justifies my statement.

I wonder whether investigations take place by Maltapost authorities to ensure that such mistakes are not repeated.
