All City Gate needs is 'dressing up'

It certainly looks like Renzo Piano's plan for City Gate and the Opera House did not go down well with the majority of Maltese. The Prime Minister's idea to build a Parliament on the so-called ruins was much better than Mr Piano's. I agree totally with Anthony Hammett - Save City Gate, (July 9): all City Gate needs is for a Maltese architect to dress it up, something that should have been done when it was built back in1963. It was built in a rush just before independence and left half done!

As for Freedom Square, this could be given a revamp with a monument to the late Sir Anthony Mamo and perhaps a fountain or two.

Last but not least, when this is all ready and done with, something should be done with the buses, moving them down to the Independence Arena with wardens and inspectors there to make sure they are kept clean on the inside and outside and that drivers are properly dressed at all times. Fine anyone who causes a nuisance or blows the horn for no reason! Then clean up Porta Reale!

I remember Castille was in the same state 40 years ago until the Labour government decided to move all the buses to one place at Porta Reale. They cleaned up the place and transformed it into what it is today.

Places like Old Bakery Street and Strait Street should form part of the Valletta project and entertainment should be encouraged to come to Valletta once again. All this can be done on a much cheaper budget, so I say pay Mr Piano off and let's built our capital city the way we want it. The government should keep in mind that it's not what Mr Piano wants but it's what the people want, otherwise he might risk losing the next election!
