77 cases of swine flu
Two new cases of swine flu were confirmed on Saturday night, including a two-year-old boy and a 22-year-old woman, but no new cases had been registered by early evening yesterday.
The toddler's case was not travel-related, meaning it was transmitted locally, while the woman contracted the flu in Belgium. Both live in Malta, as opposed to Gozo where the majority of cases have so far been detected.
In all, eight new cases were reported on Saturday, bringing to 77 the number registered on both islands in 10 days. However, 19 people have already recovered.
No patients are currently in hospital and all those diagnosed are said to be responding well to the treatment.
In line with the new approach to the illness announced last Wednesday, only vulnerable groups are being tested, such as elderly people, pregnant women and children under five. Those showing flu symptoms are immediately prescribed the antiviral Tamiflu.

@ g. scerri That is nothing new. all it says is that they have ordered more vaccination to cover the whole population rather than the estimated number of people that will contact the virus. “We expect the first batches of vaccines to arrive by early autumn, with around 60 million doses available by the end of the year – enough for 30 million people to be vaccinated – with more following after that.... ...This virus is still generally mild in the majority of people. However, it can be more severe in some cases and as with all 'flu-like viruses, some people are at higher risk than others." Ever heard about people dying from 'normal' flu? So why all this panic now? It's just another form of flu, simple as that. Also, note the inconsistency of the article you lead me to read. Vaccination to be done in August, Early Autumn (i.e. end of Sept), or end of the year (i.e. by December)? And covering 20million, 30million, or 60million people? The Telegraph is not one of the most dependable newspapers around here I'm afraid!

@ Mr. Formosa. Please see the Telegraph on line, 12 July. Article by Ben Leach under the heading: "The NHS is preparing to vaccinate the entire population against swine flu." The report adds, and I quote: "As many as 20 million people could be inoculated before the end of the year. It comes after an Essex man was confirmed on Friday as the first person without underlying health problems to have died from the virus.
Ministers have secured up to 90 million doses of the vaccine, which is expected to arrive in Britain in the next few weeks, and the rest of the population is likely to be offered vaccinations next year."

@ g.scerri
nation-wide vaccination? can you please forward details? I live in the UK, read the papers everyday, and have heard nothing about it! Maybe you just read a comment submitted by a reader suggesting it?

Both in yesterday's and today's report about Swineflu, the reporter has misleading information!
My husband has contracted swine flu-our reliable GP told us that Tamiflu is given only to vulnerable people/
Yesterday when I saw the report on the Sunday Times ,I ran to the phone to check with the Helpline if that report was accurate.I was told that TAMIFLU LI ONLY GIVEN TO VULNERABLE PEOPLE!!!!!! Saying that your information was misleading!
Having someone in your family with Swine flu is already a big burden that you have to share on your own cause everyone avoid even passing from behind your door-the last thing we need is misleading information.
Please dear reporters check with the Health Department about the latest procedure!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Following the first death of a "healthy" person in the UK from swine flu, the authorities have now announced a nation-wide vaccination programme. I wonder if Malta's Health Division has any plans in this regard.

Well for the cases from Gozo, the locality was mentioned, but here for Malta no locality is mentioned. If we are for transperancy lets us apply it fairly and squarely to all involved.

Therefore, in line with the new approach, the 77 cases potentially do not include those not tested...
