Heavy panting filled the air as police dogs and horses were blessed during an open day to mark the force’s anniversary at the Dogs Section.

Accompanied by Deputy Commissioner Joe Cachia, Superintendent Mario Spiteri and Sergeant Joseph Bayliss, the amused priest dodged an oncoming dog or two as he flicked holy water onto them.

Despite the scorching sun, the dogs then proceeded to give a spectacular display of obedience and agility as they proudly obeyed their handlers’ instructions and swiftly leapt through obstacles.

Policemen and women were also invited to bring their pets along to the activity.

Among the many dogs were four falcons owned by Sergeant Jack Farrugia, who also gave a display during which children were called to participate.

However, the pet of day must have been a donkey owned by one of the dog handlers which occasionally nibbled at clothing and gave a swift kick or two.
